Just in case any of you are interested, we are starting new swing series at the Tango Center. Charleston! Like what the flappers did back in the 20s and the partner version.
Charleston is the root of lindy hop. Josh and Karly feel it's a very important stepping stone to becoming a better swing dancer and decided a 6-week series was in order. We are limiting the class to 10 leads and 10 follows, so make sure you register early. All levels are welcome. The series will cover solo charleston, 20s partner, 30s partner, tandem, and charleston breakaways. Woohoo! This is going to be a lot of fun!

Hola Canyengueros,
Tom and I are offering Introduction to Canyengue classes. We were lucky enough to study this interesting and fun style of dance with Marta Anton and Manolo Salvador, two of the the most recogonized Cayengue authorities, on our recent trip to Buenos Aires, and we’d like to share some of that experience with you.
Canyengue is an Afro-Argentine dance style that was born in late nineteenth-century Buenos Aires. Studying Canyengue is a great way to understand the early roots of tango and milonga. It is an energetic powerful way to move to the lively 2/4 rhythms of early composers. The embrace is very close, and the African roots of tango are evident in the extreme bent-knee posture. Our teachers explained to us that dancing one Canyengue is like dancing a whole tanda of tangos.
The class will be for couples only. The reason for this is that the embrace is quite challenging. So, please bring partner—someone you are already comfortable dancing with so you can develop an understanding of the new embrace together. It is not necessary to have experience dancing tango, but it is important that partners have experience connecting with each other as dancers.
We will offer two classes as an introduction with the hope that folks may want to continue with more later on in the summer. Classes will meet Sunday, June 25 and Sunday, July 2 at the Tango Center from 7:00-8:30 with a guided practica until 9:00. The cost for each class is $10.00 per couple.
No need to pre-register. See you Sunday evening!

Everyone can come to this workshop -- pay what you can, or what you feel it is worth. The workshop is a benefit for the Tango Center.
Shahrukh lives in Buenos Aires, and is a long time teacher, performer and organizer in the Boston area. He founded the MIT-based national Tango list, and is a regular teacher at east coast Tango Festivals.
1:00-2:30 pm: "Fundamentals of Tango." Review of Tango essentials (forward/back steps and side steps, pivot and axis steps, analysis and refinement of the cruzada. Level: Open to all levels (those taking a Tango class for the very first time should try to attend the pre-milonga class first).
2:45-4:15 pm: "Tango Variations: Giros and Variations." The giro is one of the most fundamental figures of Tango but takes a while to master owing to the dynamic interdependence of the man's and woman's parts. This class will focus on giros (also called molinete in the US) and variations using giros, e.g., barridas (drags) and sacadas (displacements). Level: Intermediate Tango dancers--comfortable with basic figures such as ochos, walks, cruzada, etc.; previous introduction to the giro recommended.
4:30-6:00 pm: "Milonga with Traspie." The dance of Milonga is the predecessor to the Tango, but is very different both in feeling and technique from the Tango. "Traspie" (syncopations) are fundamental to the authentic Milonga, but are rarely taught in a milonguero style outside of Buenos Aires. Level: Open to all levels; however, some partner dance experience (in Tango or other dances) is recommended.

In the last five weeks we have pushed cans, pulled cans, pushed feet,
blindfolded ourselves, carried feet, looked like we pushed and carried feet,
improved our balance, and improved the possibility of increased connection
with our partners. This Sunday night is the last class in this series.
We will review the previous 4 classes, enjoy our special guest, Dennis Clay
(sharing his thoughts on drags and what he sees in our review) and enjoy a
superivsed practica. Dennis was the first lead I ever did a drag with that
felt completely natural and easy. Basically we will all be creative, learn
from our guest, share our experiences with our partners, and laugh.

Shaunna and I would like to invite you to take our series class beginning Wednesday, August 9th. We're really excited about it. It's full of fun exercises, embarrassing moments, new ideas, and awesome skills.
Ever feel like you are stuck in a dancing rut? Swingout, swingout, lindy circle, swingout, lindy circle, tuck turn, right side pass, swingout, lindy circle........ Although these are all great moves, we would like to help you break through some of your dancing barriers. Beginning Wednesday, August 9th, we willl be exploring how to use connection, the music, and some fundamental dance skills to find each dancer's voice -- their creativity and how to connect that creativity to your partner and the music. The first three-weeks of class will cover fundamental swing skills. The last three weeks will be packed full of silliness. We are limiting it to 10 leads and 10 follows, so save your spot ASAP by sending an email to eugenelindy@gmail.com and indicate whether you are a lead or a follow.

Tonight I am DJ-ing the Fusion Milonga. Demetrius had an unfortunate accident last Sunday and is recovering from being thrown by a horse. A full recovery is in the near future and the horse is also doing fine.
As usual we will have the "rotational practica" the first hour which will consist of mostly traditional, "Golden age", very danceable tangos.
The second hour we transition from traditional to Alternative with my favorite sing along waltz "No Vuelvas Maria" and if you enjoy a good cry I'll be playing "Milonga Triste" by Canaro.
The third hour starting at 10:00 we embark on our journey into tango dream land with selections from B-tribe, Yanni, Griffin and finally from the latest Gotan CD "Paris, Texas" a slow moody close embrace shoe softening nuevo tango piece.

12:00-1:30pm Walking in parallel and crossed feet in close embrace. This will be a very detailed look at walking with many execercises to develop dancer's feeling for these two fundamental situations.
2:00-3:30pm Walking backward, walking forward. This class will continue the exploration of walking to situations withthe leader walking backward and the follower walking forward. We will develop walking patterns that are the roots of many step sequences in tango.
4:00-5:30pm Circular walks inside and outside of the frame. We will develop
walking in very tight circles, transitioning from parallel to crossed feet, from walking backward to walking forward, and so on.

Hello All,
I am starting up a new series class tomorrow (attendance to every class won't be necessary to understand the subject matter). I have been studying different forms of dance my entire life and have noticed some important parallels between Tango and other dance and movement techniques. The class will not focus on steps because I don't believe that you fully reach your potential in a class by just learning the steps. I will be focusing on technique and body fundamentals of tango. By body fundamentals I am referring to how your body works and how certain movements or habits effect your dance. You could be amazed how the littlest adjustment in a forgotten corner of your body can change/help your dance.
I plan to focus on different parts of our body. I want to work up from the floor, it is always good to start with good grounding : ).

This week I will be focusing on relaxing! This is not only an important part of tango but also of life. Muscle tension can easily block the communication between partners and it can absorb energy and not allow it to make it to the necessary places to allow for complete understanding of the lead and follower's intentions. And on a deeper body fundamental level, most injuries happen because of unnecessary muscle use. We will be doing some exercises to find tension and then easy ways to release it. We will also work some with the embrace and a few tango steps that become so much easier and smoother when muscles are relaxed instead of gripped.

Charleston is a FUN and SILLY dance form that originated in the
1920's. It is one of the predecessors to the lindy hop, and
co-evolved with the lindy hop in the 1930's and '40's. Charleston
moves can be incorporated into other forms of swing dancing, and work
well for dancing to faster tempos.
Aaron Vonderhaar has been dancing Charleston both socially and in
competitions around the country since 2004. He has led a Charleston
performance troupe in San Diego and has been a multi-time finalist in
Jack and Jill lindy competitions, often incorporating Charleston moves
and stylings into his dance. Aaron has developed a novel approach to
teaching Charleston that emphasizes creativity and partnership.

The first class will teach balboa footwork and lead-follow connection.
No experience is required to take this class, but dancers with some
bal experience will benefit from this fresh perspective, which opens
up new improvisational opportunities within the dance.
The second class will build upon both the single-time and double-time
balboa basic, emphasizing a selected subset of ad-lib steps (such as
scoots, drags, paddles, crab walks, taps, kicks, step-steps, hops,
hangman, grapevine, and suzie-q). Dancers should have some previous
balboa experience before taking this class.
What is Balboa?
Balboa is an 8-count partner dance that originated in Southern
California and gained great popularity in the 1930's and 40's, in
response to the desire to dance in crowded spaces to big band swing
music. Balboa dancing is now experiencing an international revival.
Because the dance can be done entirely in close embrace, using subtle
lead-follow communication, its fancy footwork can be done with ease at
lightning-fast tempos.

About Aaron:
Aaron Vonderhaar has dancing balboa since 2003. He has studied under
many of the world's best balboa dancers, and regularly attends balboa
conferences, in California and out of state. Improvisation within the
dance framework is Aaron's specialty. He is considered one of the best
and most creative balboa leaders in San Diego.
About Colleen:
Colleen was first introduced to balboa in 1999, while she was living
in Los Angeles. Immediately hooked, she has since then sought out
opportunities to study under the masters of the dance, such as Willie
Desatoff, Melinda Comeau, Sylvia Sykes, Sylvia Skylar and Eric
Robison, Steve Garrett, and many others. She attended the Balboa
Rendezvous in San Diego, CA, in 2004, 2005, and 2007, and looks
forward to sharing with you what she's learned about the dance.

This Friday is the First Friday of October and we're having our First Friday Art Walk Milonga (Friday@Five)!! And there's an after party at Davis's (Loive & Broadway) which we co-produced, and is Tango-themed, and our presence is needed, not only to make the atmosphere but also promote tango and West Broadway. (Like the TC, Davis DIVA etc are under threat by measure 20-134 ... so this is solidarity dancing!)
So Friday at Five the milonga starts at the tango center!
At 5:30 LOS BANDIDOS DEL TANGO will start playing and I believe that they will be playing 3 NEW songs!
We will dance our hearts out until 7:30 when we will move over to Davis's down the street for the after party! We will even have a short, fun tango lesson there for beginners!
And one more fun thing, a suggested color of dress, red and black. Just so that we really look the part of tango, but the dress "code" is completely up to you if you want to or not.

For absolute beginners and advanced dancers alike.
This class will address the four essential "connections" in Tango: connection to the ground, the music, your partner, and other dancers on the floor. We will discover the fundamental building blocks of tango and explore how they can be played with to create a dance all our own.
(Bonus… this class is free for those who take the next two classes.)
1:15-2:45 The Musical Movement of Turns
For solidly intermediate dancers.
Steven will introduce a technique for turning that helps the Leader and the Follower have a musical conversation within the turn. We will explore how the Leader and Follower can each add to the energy of the turn, giving it zip or slowing it down. We will address how each step can be an opportunity for musical sharing and expression.
3:00-4:30 Tango on Two Feet: Fun with Double-Weight
For solidly intermediate dancers.
We will build upon the technique introduced in the Turns class and have a blast breaking Tango's "one-weighted-foot" rule. Oh the fun we can have when we become comfortable with both feet on the ground. Slow steps, stops, and funky pivots will be the play of the day.
No need to pre-register.

The first half hour will be devoted to foundational footwork for
bal-swing and lead-follow connection. No experience or partner is
required to take this class.
During the remaining 50 minutes we will learn bal-swing variations,
including an exciting move called the "throw-out." Dancers will need
to be comfortable with bal-swing footwork and timing to fully
participate in this portion of the workshop.
Balboa is an 8-count partner dance that originated in Southern
California and gained great popularity in the 1930's and 1940's in
response to the desire to dance in rather crowded spaces to big band
swing music. Balboa is now experiencing an international revival.
Since the dance can be done entirely in close embrace using subtle
lead-follow communication, its fancy footwork can be performed with
ease, even at lightning-fast tempos.

This week the Garden Avenue Quartet is playing with guests Noah Brenner and Travis Corwin. Garden Avenue Quartet is a project of David Heritage, the mandolin player of Los Bandidos del Tango. They will also have a stand-up bass!!! They are playing tango music and I am looking forward to it! I love strings!
Charles is DJing! It will be fun night full full of energy and just happiness. I know week nine at the university and winter weather is wearing down on all of us these days but Tuesday is going to be a great lift. Kara performs on video
As a dancer, Kara moves with great presence and dynamic. Drawing from the roots of tango’s past, she is infusing traditional elements with a more contemporary feel, and is expanding the boundaries of expression in tango.
As a teacher she has developed a unique and codified methodology. With a hands-on approach, a meticulous eye for detail, and a love for Tango that is contagious, Kara has developed a pedagogy that is designed to empower the student by giving them tools needed for a solid technique, connection, improvisation, musicality, and development of a personal style.
She currently lives in Buenos Aires and teaches well-attended classes at Tango Brujo. She has also given workshops and participated in festivals in Buenos Aires, Asia, Europe and the United States. |
